LGBTQIA+ Statement
“...great workplaces boil down to not wasting human potential. As a global society, we all need to recognize that every person counts. That all people deserve and can have a great experience in work environments.”
- Ed Frauenheim, Director of Research and Content, Great Place to Work® Ontario
First Steps Theatre recognizes that systems of power, privilege, and oppression have traditionally and continually created barriers for those in the LGBTQIA+ community. We recognize that, even within our operating country of Canada, many in this community do not feel safe or supported.
First Steps Theatre cherishes the diversity of humanity; a diversity that includes gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, non-binary, and all other sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. Any discrimination or harassment on the basis of these grounds will not be tolerated by First Steps Theatre.
We commit to fostering an environment of purposeful inclusion and safe collaboration. Where all backgrounds and experiences can be heard and appreciated. As a company that develops stories written by Canadians, we appreciate the depth and richness that the LGBTQIA+ community contributes to the Canadian voice at large.
We encourage LGBTQIA+ performers, directors, playwrights, and all other creatives to join us in developing new Canadian works as well as to engage us, as a company, in meaningful conversations of inclusion.
We are not perfect but we are committed to learning, growing, and being open.
